In Matthew 5:13-16 Jesus shifts from the character of the Christian in the Beatitudes and toward the influence of the Christian in the world. We will influence the world in much the same way salt (flavor, preservative) and light (penetrates darkness, reveals hidden realities) function in the world.

In Matthew 5:7-12, the second half of the Beatitudes, Jesus teaches that the way of life in the Kingdom means the pursuit of righteousness: mercy and compassion, sincerity and single-mindedness, making peace by enabling flourishing, and the persecution that comes to the righteous.
