Salt and Light
Salt burns, salt flavors, salt preserves, salt purifies, salt melts ice and salt makes you thirsty. In short, salt influences everything it touches. Happy are those who are salty followers of Jesus. How do I get salty? How do I stay salty? Every time the power goes out in our house, I remember I need to buy batteries. So out come the matches and the candles…and they work. Light, no matter the size of the source, spreads out into every direction, reaching as far as its strength will take it. It remains totally invisible until it reflects off of the surface of an object and miraculously we see what couldn’t be seen. Jesus said that the happy Christian is the luminous Christian. Learn how to be the light by which others can see. Be light, be happy!

Persecution
There is a door to happiness that no one, I know of, wants to open. Simon and Garfunkel were aware of it when they sang “Blessed are the sat upon, the spat upon, the ratted on,” 40 years ago. But they were only repeating Jesus when He told His followers, “Happy are the taunted, the harassed, those who flee bullies and those whose lives are ruined by lies. Happy are those who take one, or two, or even three for Me.” Discover how happiness disguises itself as persecution.

A City on A Hill
You are the light of the world. We are a city on a hill. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they - that is, God - puts it on its stand, here in this beautiful facility, in this strategic location, in the center of Oak Park, in the center of Chicago, in the center of the United Stated. And this lamp gives light to everyone in Oak Park and beyond. In the same way, then, Calvary Memorial Church, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

Happy are the Peacemakers
The ancient Hebrew word for peace is shalom. It means much more than our word peace that suggests calm and a freedom from anxiety. Shalom means healing and wholeness. It means getting all the pieces back together in their right places so life and relationships make perfect sense. This is what Jesus came to accomplish in each of us. When we join Jesus in becoming shalom makers, our happiness is multiplied.

Pure In Heart
You can’t help but hear a dinner bell. Bells ring with such a pure tone they pierce through other sounds like a knife. When our hearts ring with a purity that is without complication and compromise our lives cut through guilt and shame as if they don’t exist. When that is the case, we don’t have to go looking for happiness, it finds us.

Pornography
Lust, like other temptations, entices us deeper and deeper until it creates a kind of culture of sin within our lives. Yet, God not only calls us to purity, but God also empowers us by his grace to live in freedom from binding habits.
