Sermons About Serve
Serving like Jesus
As followers of Jesus we are called to emulate the life and practice of Jesus. In the Gospel of Mark (10.45) Jesus tells us that he came not to be served but to serve; One of the greatest examples left for us of Jesus' servant heart is found in John 13 when we read that he got down on his knees and washed his disciples feet. If that doesn't turn our understanding of leadership on its head what will? As Jesus' apprentices the question is not if we will serve but where! We are all called to take up the towel and serve. Richard Foster, in his book, Celebration of Disciple, says that if the cross is a sign of submission then the towel is the sign of service. We are all called, says Foster, to the ministry of the towel.

Suffering Successfully - #4 (11-23-08)
Stan talks about what it means to suffer successfully, to look at Jesus as an example. We've been taught Don't get mad, get even. But Stan challenges us instead to give a blessing. We need to pray, be hospitable, and serve others with the gifts God has given us.

The Full Life is Meant to be Shared
Lead Pastor Jeff Lawrence's son, Mike, had an accident while they were vacationing in La Jolla, California. On Sunday morning, October 5th, he fell out a window onto a concrete walkway nearly three stories below. Amazingly, Mike's life was spared, and in time he should see a full recovery. Jeff and family remained with Mike in California while he was recovering. This traumatic experience combined with several weeks in a beautiful place created space for some intense reflection. Jeff will be sharing some of what he's been learning in a new sermon series called "Living in La Jolla: Field Notes from Heaven-on-Earth."

I Can Serve!
Serving requires an attitude check so we can have a humble spirit. The blueprint for God's church is for us to serve together and my joy comes as I accept my responsibility and serve as God has gifted me.

Galatians 5.13-21: Through Love Serve Others
Those who have been set free by Jesus have been called to freedom, but that freedom can be used for different things. Today in Paul’s letter to the Galatians he gives us the purpose of freedom and how we can enjoy the freedom that Christ has given freely to us.

Loving like Jesus
As we move toward Christmas, our eyes are turned toward Jesus. The Christmas story centers on His birth and introduces us to God's plan to win us back to Himself. We speak of the "incarnation" of Jesus - the act of His "taking on flesh" so that he might walk among us, love us, and ultimately give His life for us. "Incarnational" has become a very popular word in evangelical writings in the past 5-10 years - and more than being just the current "buzz-word" I believe it relates very well to the series of messages we've just completed, as well as putting feet to our mission of "loving people, following Jesus, and serving the world." In Christ, God took on flesh, so that He might relate to us. We in turn are called to step into the lives of others - to literally be "Jesus with skin on" to a world that needs to see and know the love of God.
