Genesis: 25 The Beginning of Hope in the Promises of God: A Life of Abraham
Why does God chose whom he choses? In this passage we see three incidents where God seems to choose one group/person over another. The answer may be as simple as the gospel is more about God and His glory than it is for our own glory. God blessed Isaac, because He had chose this line of Abraham to be the line that would one day produce the Messiah. God continually appears as the sovereign one here, which leads us back to the question why again? Romans 9 attempts to answer this question, but I would also say that the story we have unfolded in these past 12 chapters also helps us understand, why.

A Time for Every Matter
When it comes to the events and experiences of our existence, randomness does not rule. God does. He is the Sovereign over our seasons. The Teacher reminds us of this fact in Ecclesiastes 3, and the Cross reminds us that God's ordering is for the good of those who believe.

Moving Anywhere But There
Transitions in all of life are inevitable. Transitions with God are difficult for us because we generally cannot see where or to what we are to transition to. God may take us out of our current dilemma, however He often moves us on into a more difficult situation. When God comes to help us and He in turn brings us (in our opinion) into a worse situation than where we were, it creates a problem for us. Why would God, who is sovereign, allow or orchestrate such a situation. Unless, of course, God is up to something we cannot understand.

Acts 22:22-23:11 – Strengthened During Suffering
After Paul was taken into custody by the Roman soldiers he narrowly avoided being flogged by them. Later he was brought before the Jewish authorities and the proceedings turned violent and Paul had to be rescued again from the mob. That night, while in prison, Jesus came and stood by Paul and encouraged him by saying that he was faithfully proclaiming the good news about Himself and that he was on his way to do the same in Rome. God is in complete control when we are going through times of suffering but that does not mean that He will always protect us from them. He is also near to us in these times, though, and if we draw near to Him He will comfort us and strengthen us to continue to live with Him on the mission that He has called us to.

With a Mighty Hand and Outstretched Arm (Exodus 13:17 - 15:21)
God set his love on an undeserving people and delivered them out of slavery by his mighty power, for his glory, and for their good. This points ahead to our own experience of salvation in Jesus. We ought to consider our own deliverance out of sin with great gratitude and rejoicing.

That You May Know: The Story of Exodus
For his own sake and glory, God manifested his glory and greatness by acting with signs and wonders to deliver the nation of Israel. God's purpose in delivering Israel, and the purpose of the writing of the book of Exodus, is "that you may know" that he is the Lord of all things. God acts for his own glory, saves a people for his own glory, and calls us to live for his glory.

John 6:1-71 - Hard Teachings and the Miracle of Faith
Jesus confronted the people who were following Him for selfish reasons about the need for faith. He didn't shirk from teaching hard truths because He had faith in God's power to draw people to faith in Him, and we are to share the truth of His Word with boldness in His example.
