Sermons About Sovereignty
Sovereignty and election
Is someone being a Christian ultimately attributable to their location, chance events in their life (think the film Sliding Doors) or because God chose them? And if he chose them to be, on what basis did He do it? Was it on the basis of foreseen good works, or even foreseen faith – does God pick those who are going to pick him?! No. A person trusts in Jesus because God chose them by grace (completely unmerited favour from the Lord) alone, but why? And doesn’t this mean they will live a deliberately sinful life knowing that they are chosen and therefore will be saved? And doesn’t this make the person proud if they believe they have been chosen and others haven't? And doesn’t it make evangelism pointless – since some are chosen anyway? Is it fair? Is it good news? Note: this sermon was followed by a time of Q&A.

God's Glory in Salvation (John 17, Bob Brainard)
God's manifold glory in the salvation of men is no more clearly set forth than in the Lord's High Priestly prayer, found in John 17. The sovereignty of God, the knowledge of Christ, the eternal glory that is Christ's and that believers will forever behold as the redeemed in the presence of their Redeemer are all realities that await us who know Him. And all this, "To the praise of the glory of His grace."

The Day the Earth Stood Still
The particularity of Jesus, the worthlessness of our efforts to justify ourselves before God and the sovereignty and grace of God the Father all fly in the face of today’s fashion of presenting all ideas, morals and ambitions as being of equal worth. But John tells us that Jesus said it was so – that God has no other plan outside of Jesus.

The Will of God and The Wickedness of Man
As I read through John 18, the fourth verse stood out to me as I read, "Jesus therefore, knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward " Here is Jesus in the garden praying with His disciples after their Passover meal. He is facing a Roman cohort who is coming to take Him away where He will be mocked. beaten and crucified. In the face of this impending doom the words, "Jesus therefore, knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward" are staggering in their import. Jesus simultaneously confronts the wickedness of man and the will of God as He steps out of the shadows to drink the cup that the Father has given Him. Jesus willingness to suffer on behalf of those who have rejected Him and that fact that that very wickedness will fulfill the plan of God and accomplish the salvation of wicked men is so profound that it is amazing and should evoke our joy and gratitude.

Daniel 2:1-49
Q. How do I speak up for God in a pagan world? How can we remain effective as Christians, avoiding being sucked into the world's ways? A. By knowing where to draw the line! When Daniel is faced with execution along with the other wise men of Babylon, he looks to God for mercy and to Nebuchadnezzar for time. God displays to Nebuchadnezzar His sovereignty over time and creation by accurately relating the detail of his dream and by revealing the far distant future to him. A future where all earthly powers are eventually destroyed by the eternal Kingdom of Jesus Christ. God shows that He is in overall control on a scale not usually recognised by men. God's kingdom however is not 'in the future', it is parallel and sometimes, as for Nebuchadnezzar, it breaks into this world. God placed Daniel and his friends in Nebuchadnezzar's court, protected them when necessary and through them demonstrated His sovereignty to Nebuchadnezzar. There is a God in Heaven who knows all things, is in total control and who reveals mysteries. Can you think of a safer place to put yourself?
