Philosophers have been trying to describe and explain this reality for thousands of years. Sigmund Freud used the image of a horse and rider to describe the ego and id. About sixteen hundred years before Freud, Plato used the metaphor of a chariot driver and a team of horses to describe the same thing. In their book Switch, Chip and Dan Heath borrow a metaphor that I think works great. It is a rider on an elephant. We all have a rider and an elephant.
