Sermons About Story
Galatians 1.11-24: Disciple - be one, make one
The gospel is literally a joyful message. Paul encounters this joyful message on the road to Damascus. God called Him and revealed Jesus to His heart. In a moment the mystery of the cross and the empty tomb of Jesus was unveiled to Paul. Paul never recovered from that. He was changed. He was now a disciple. He was commissioned to preach, to make disciples. We are all called and commissioned as Paul was. Sure it looks different on how we have the Son revealed to us, but the story line is the same. We are chosen and called as the Son of God is revealed to our heart. God also calls us to a particular service for the equipping of saints for the work of service to the building up of the body of Christ. We are all called to be a disciple and to make disciples.

God's story is vast and spans throughout all of history. But using the interaction Jesus has on the Road to Emmaus, we see how Jesus interprets this whole story...all in light of himself. This sheds a new light on the life, death, and especially the resurrection of Christ, and what it means for our story.

What's Your Story? (Romans 8:18-23, 28, 31-39)
The themes of brokenness and redemption dominate the gospel story. If we look closely at our own lives, we can spot these same themes, and maybe even Jesus too. In this sermon, Pastor Joel Lindsey tells his story in order to point to the greater story God is telling.

First to Worship
How do you respond when your enemies fall in worship before the Lord? That question might sound like a hypothetical debate for us today, but for the original readers of Matthew’s gospel account they had to face it head on. The very first people to engage in formal worship of the newborn king were from “the east.” We might call them the “Babylonian worship team.” The enemies and oppressors of the Jews were on their face in worship. Wow! What a paradigm shift! Key Passages: Matthew 2:1 & Isaiah 49:6

We Live in His Story
As you read through the Gospel of Mark it is not just a journal of activities that chronicle the lives of Jesus and his followers. It is a narrative that tells His story. With every event and situation it reveals who this Jesus really is.

All Things Well
For the first time in Mark's Gospel, Jesus heads into Gentile territory. In these first 2 stories amongst the Gentiles, Mark teaches us how we are to relate to someone like Jesus, and why we can relate in that way. But Mark goes beyond that, too, and tells us more about the identity and purpose of Jesus. To relate to Jesus by faith is more than a ticket to heaven; rather, Mark wants us to see that in Jesus is wholeness and restoration, the complete and total healing of the world.

The Greatest Story
We are born into this world in the middle of a very important story. But unless we understand the story, we have no idea what's happening or why any of it really matters. One of the claims of the Christian faith is that it tells us the story that makes sense of life. It tells us how it all began, what's gone wrong, and how it can be made right.

Psalm 121
When we come to God all our problems are solved… Right? When we embark on relationship with the Almighty, one thing we can absolutely count on is that all our problems, all our “issues” all the hard parts of life get solved, smoothed out… dealt with. And should we find pain or difficulty or suffering in our lives? That’s a sure sign that God has left us, has rejected us, is in fact punishing us…

Little is Much
This week we start our summer series of messages based on the stories Jesus told about the kingdom of heaven. About a dozen of his stories began with the words "the kingdom of heaven is like." In trying to understand what our world would look like if the values of God's kingdom really took root - these stories are a good starting point. Today, we pick up the concept that the kingdom will not come in a radical, military or political takeover, but rather, through the small but powerful and pervasive infl uence of kingdom agents spread liberally throughout the existing structures of society. The revolutionary influence of the kingdom has been called by some "the quiet revolution" but it's power is incredible! "True evangelical faith cannot lie dormant. It clothes the naked, it feeds the hungry, it comforts the sorrowful, it shelters the destitute, it serves those that harm it, it binds up that which is wounded, it has become all things to all people." (quote from Menno Simons, 1496-1561)

Five Stones of Rememberance
Throughout redemptive history certain religious groups have gathered to say prayers, preach sermons, recite creeds, sing hymns and then as the gathering ended would exclaim, "That was church." At the same time heaven also makes an assessment about those same church services by asking, "This is church"? As we recount our story, on this final Sunday of 2006, can we come into agreement with heaven so we both can say, "This is church"! ~ Pastor Mel Five Stories of 2006 1. Play Your Role
All of us love a good story. Whether in film, literature, or personal conversation there is something inside of each of us that responds to a good story. And most of these stories have several elements in common -- setting, character, conflict, climax, resolution. But there is something more. Most stories are about redemption. And whether the story is fiction or non-fiction we respond to this theme of redemption because redemption is not only beautiful, it is the ultimate cry of the human heart. And as much as each of these stories reflects the theme of redemption they also borrow from and point to a much greater story. This story is not merely a story with a redemptive theme -- it is itself the redemptive story. In this story we are both the audience and the participants. We have a role to play in the story that makes sense of all other stories. Listen in as we look to the Scriptures to find out why and how we are to play our role.

The Big Picture
Revelation is a confusing section of Scripture because we can so quickly lose sight of the letter's focus, Jesus. Before we begin our journey through Revelation we'll take a step back and look at the big picture to gain some perspective for the book as a whole. What we find is our need to seize our moment in history.
