How to Survive a Surprise
I Peter 4:12-19 12 Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you. 13 But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when His glory is revealed. 14 If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. 15 If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler. 16 However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name. 17 For it is time for judgment to begin with the family of God; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God? 18 And, "If it is hard for the righteous to be saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?" 19 So then, those who suffer according to God's will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good.

We Study To Be An Example
Context is King. If we ignore context we can make the Bible say anything we want. For example, I can command you to do something most think is an "un-Christian" thing to do - all by using Scripture...“Judas went out and hanged himself; do likewise, and what you do, do quickly” (Matt27:5b; Lk3:11; Jn13:27b). All from Scripture; obviously not godly activity - context is vital. How does context impact what Paul writes in the opening chapter of 1 Thessalonians?

The Impact On Humanity
Sin's effect can be easily seen collectively as a large mass of humanity. It is easy to see sins effect there isn't it? Suicide bombers, war, greed, disease, divorce, murder, etc. Why do all these things happen? If God is in control then why doesn't He stop all of this stuff? If God is good then why does He allow pain and suffering? Just like an earthquake Adam's original sin became the epicenter of an event that will be felt until Christ comes back and defeats sin once and for all. In reality Adam's sin became a chain reaction that set off quakes every since then in each of us. The reality is that each of us are epicenters of this violent event and the effects of that are seen collectively as the tremors ring out around us.

Lessons From A Storm
Life is full of storms. Why does God at times lead us into them? What might we learn about ourselves, about God and about what is most important as a result? Pastor Doug explores some of these questions as we study the story of Jesus calming the storm in Mark 4:35-41.

Blessed Persecution, Pt. 2 (Matthew 5:10-12)
Persecution, in all its forms and various degrees, is and has been the experience of the righteous ever since the blood of Abel was shed by his brother Cain. We often respond to ridicule, harassment, and other forms of persecution with anger, resentment, retaliation, and judgment. However, this is sin and we need to come to grips with the Lord's commands in Matthew 5:10-12 and respond with rejoicing, gladness, and graciousness. It is not easy and it certainly is not something we do in our own strength; it is a fruit of grace in the heart. The Christian, however, has a hope in heaven and a reward from the Lord for humble obedience that is our true hope and encouragement as we live out our faith in the midst of a hostile world.

To Win Over Sin
I Peter 4:1-11 1. Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because he who has suffered in his body is done with sin. 2. As a result, he does not live the rest of his earthly life for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God. 3. For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do—living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry. 4. They think it strange that you do not plunge with them into the same flood of dissipation, and they heap abuse on you. 5. But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. 6. For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead, so that they might be judged according to men in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit. 7. The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray. 8. Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. 9. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. 10. Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms. 11. If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.

What To Do With Our Desires
Each day we are faced with a choice between two desires: the desire between the deceitful desire for sin and the Spirit-inspired desire for God. However, we can sing for joy because the judgment that all our idolatry and sinful desires deserved fell upon Him as He tucked us under His wing and was our shield in our greatest moment of need.
