The Armor Of God
In concluding this extraordinary letter, Paul sums up all of the power and blessings that come from the gospel in this extended metaphor of a Christian battling against the forces of evil and darkness in the world. He combines the image of a roman soldier with the Old Testament imagery of God himself coming to defend and fight for his own people. Christians are to wear this same armor so that they can resist the power of the devil and push back the darkness in our world today.

He Knows Our Thoughts
For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account. Our Compassionate High Priest. Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Sword of the Spirit
"The sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God" is a weapon, not to be used against people, but against "the spiritual forces of evil." And it is to be used for our own spiritual growth: to give us clarity about ourselves and to equip us to live the Christian life.
