Does Your Teacher Not Pay The Temple Tax?
The point of these verses is that, just as royal sons are exempt from the taxes imposes by theit fathers, Jesus is exempt from the "tax" imposed by his Father. Exempt though He is, Jesus will pay the tax so as not to offend. Thus he sets an example for all of us. In these verses we are reminded again of Jesus' humility; He who so controls nature and its powers that He stills storms and multiplies food now reminds Peter of that power by this miracle, while nevertheless remaining so humle that He would not needlessly cause offense.
