What Does the Holy Spirit Do?
While I am truly ecstatic regarding all of the above I am mindful that we alone are incapable of saving a life or even drawing somebody to Christ, this is the ministry of the Holy Spirit. We can work ever so hard, give so much of our time and money but, if the Holy Spirit is not engaged nothing of significance will ever be accomplished. A heart cannot be wonderfully warmed for Christ without the Holy Spirit for it is the Holy Spirit that points the person to Christ.

Gather to Me My Saints, My Faithful Ones
Someone has commented that for Catholics a saint is someone who has performed 7 verifiable miracles--but for Presbyterians, a saint is someone who’s brief! Researchers James Patterson and Peter Kim learned that 70% of Americans believed that America has no living heroes. About the same number say that our children have no meaningful role models. Ninety-six% say that they, and nobody else, determine what is and what isn’t moral in their lives; instead, they base their decisions on their own experience—even on their daily whims. Those numbers baffle me, since they must include a lot of folks who call themselves Christians! We Christians need good role models for our children - and for ourselves. It’s time we reclaim the notion of sainthood—drag it out from the bottom of the box up in the attic—dust it off—and make it part of our lives. Saints aren’t folks who’ve been dead hundreds of years, and sainthood didn’t go out with the Protestant Reformation. Sainthood, like faith, is contagious. We catch it from those around us. You demonstrate your faith-in-action as God’s own when you make an offering, when you write a note of sympathy or congratulations, when you call to encourage someone, when you teach Sunday School or serve on a committee, when you make a dish for a bereavement meal. You also become a model of faith when you present a cheerful face to your family or co-workers, when you practice patience with people who irritate you (even if they live in the same house with you), when you observe someone in trouble and offer compassion rather than judgment, when you face adversity with the trust that God will help you through it.

An Impacting Teacher
The miraculous moments of life can be used to impact our children for Christ. An impacting teacher realizes that although life is full of miracles and burdens, our children need to hear about the wonderful things that God is doing. We must be careful not to communicate about the burdens and weights that we bear. Children need to hear about miracles.

Live by the gospel
Do you ever wonder if we will win with our gospel work? After all, each week, I suspect that there are more physical births in our town than spiritual births. We at FBC are massively blessed by God in seeing a person every few months become a believer in Christ – many churches would envy that. But its tough to engage with the pagan world. Remember that Jesus worked with only 12, and one fell away – so when he left this earth there were only 11 to evangelise the world. But look what they did!!! … So there is great hope for us. Timothy is in a similar situation at Ephesus; its tough engaging with the world, and making sure everyone in the church is on board. In the world we live in, with anti-God behaviour all around us – we don’t withdraw; we engage. We do that by making sure we teach the Scriptures. We know people are wrapped up in themselves; we know the human tendency to look good on the outside – but it is possible to be genuine. It is possible to be transformed by the truth from God, which we discover in the scriptures. To meet the Man who is the truth; to allow him to change us and equip us for every good ministry. Changing people one at a time, will change this world. Are the Scriptures changing you?

Pass on the gospel
Young Tim has been pastoring the church in Ephesus; he is now wanted by Paul in Rome. How is he to finish up his ministry? In this last letter Paul wrote from his Roman prison he urges his young lieutenant to stick with the gospel. This will involve enormously hard work but it is essential if the gospel is to be passed on faithfully to the subsequent generations. The situation in Asia is tough – persecution is on the rise; the great apostle is in prison and some would use that as a stick to shame the Christians with. Error has started to creep into the churches and Tim must fight internal as well as external battles. We may think the situation here in 1st C Ephesus is unusual. But what we have here are the marching orders for every Minister of the gospel, every pastor, everyone who wants to pass on and teach the gospel – whether to children, or amongst teens or adults in any size group.

A Submissive Teacher
Authority will always test us with regard to our submission. As teachers, we must first submit to God if we want and expect our students to submit to us. Too much authority is lost because teachers don't understand their role under God and over the students. This sermon will help you cultivate the mind and attitude of Christ in the classroom.

A Connecting Teacher
God wants teachers to be more than just warm bodies in the classroom. He wants them to connect and make a difference with the students. Jesus showed His love for children by how He connected with them in teaching the Bible, even though His followers didn't understand. These 8 principles will help you as a teacher connect with your students.
