Letter to the Church in Thyatira. Revelation 2:18-29
There's no such thing as a perfect church; at least, not on Earth. We may find good and helpful churches, but not perfect ones. These letters are all written to imperfect churches that Jesus loves despite their imperfections. Jesus may love these churches, but he nonetheless sorrows when we fall short and wants them and us to strive to be more like him. We need to remember that the words of these letters are the words of the Son of God; we need to pay attention, to listen to Him. Jesus' opening words of praise are genuine and uplifting - His words of caution are rooted in love. The church at Thyatira is found to be too tolerant, and we too are at risk of following the World's way of tolerating things that are wrong. God will not tolerate these things, and neither should we. However, even the Jezebel of Thyatira is given a chance. Her failure to repent will bring disaster on her, her children and those who associate with her. In contrast, those who overcome temptation and hold to the truth will have the reward that He promises; the bright morning star that is revealed in Rev 22 to be none other than Jesus, the Son of God. It can be tempting to refrain from confronting our brother or sister with a hard truth; it might be too uncomfortable, but true love does not shirk the painful but necessary truths. Let us not be content with error; let us not tolerate those things that offend our Lord and King.
