The Way, the Truth, and the Life
We are in the Gospel of John again today. We began this year considering the 7 miracles of Jesus as told by John. Now, we are considering the 7 “I Am” statements of John. Seven times, John records Jesus proclaiming Himself with the introductory formula “I am.” We have considered the statement “I am the bread of life.” We said that just as bread sustains our lives physically, Jesus proclaimed Himself to be the One who sustains us spiritually and eternally. We have considered the statement, “I am the light of the world.” This statement gives us a radical claim (I am the light of the world) which calls us to a radical discipleship (anyone who follows me will never walk in the darkness) which guarantees for us a radical promise (but will have the light of life). Then, there were the statements, “I am the door” and “I am the Good Shepherd” that point to Jesus being the only way to salvation. Last time, we looked at that glorious Easter themed claim, “I am the resurrection and the life.” Today, we have before us what one has called the “premier expression of the theology of this entire Gospel.” (Gary Burge, NIV Application Commentary, p. 392)

Looking Towards Heaven
For Christians this world is not as good as it gets. Jesus has gone back to his father's house and is adding on a room for you and for me. When the Father decides the time is right, the Son will come and take us home to a place that is better than we could think or imagine. To understand John 14:1-6 we need to understand the Jewish marriage tradition. When we explore this tradition the hope of heaven comes alive in fresh new ways.

What Sort of Person Ought You to Be? - 2 Peter 3:10-13
So it's going to come. The end is near. But how near is one of the greatest questions never answered. Oh, we know, many books have come and gone, many preachers and teachers have postulated, invested in lots of chart paper, and invested their whole future in what is essentially unknowable. It's not unthinkable, unworthy of discussion, or un-valuable. But having a unhealthy view of the ends times can be..well..unhealthy. Instead Peter asks the question, "What sort of person ought you to be?" in light of all that is coming - in light of the coming return of Jesus and judgement of the earth. That means today. How are you going to live today? If we are not promised tomorrow - why are we focused so much on it? What would look like to live for Him today, in His Kindgom? If it's all gonna burn - how ought you to live?

Joy Amid the Ruins
When the baby who was the gospel was born in a manger, only some came to see – again, not everyone responded to the angels’ songs. The shepherds and the wise men from the orient were there, but others ignored it. Still others, like Herod – and later the temple authorities – tried to destroy the gospel child.
