WHAT IS THE GOSPEL? (1 Corinthians 15:1-11) 06-07-09 [Note: the first few minutes of this Sermon did not get recorded]
NOTE: the first few minutes of this sermon did not get recorded. Read the "Introduction" below and the Scripture passage (1 Corinthians 15:1-11) before listening to this message. INTRODUCTION: --> Today’s Topic: Theology/the gospel. --> Background to “the gospel” (“good news”): In the Old Testament [see Isaiah 40:9; 52:7-10; 60:6; 61:1]; In the Roman World [the good news (proclaimed) related to the Emperor (i.e. his birth, accomplishments, military victories, etc.)]; **In the New Testament [“the gospel of God” (Ro 1:1; 1Th 2:2,9), “the gospel about Jesus Christ” (Mk 1:1; Ro 15:19); “the gospel of God’s grace” (Ac 20:24); “the gospel of peace” (Eph 6:15); “the gospel of your salvation” (Eph 1:13); and “the gospel of the glory of Christ” (2 Co 4:4).” **Taken from the New International Dictionary of the Bible]; --> A Definition of the Gospel [“… the embracing category that holds much of the Bible together, and takes Christians from lostness & alienation from God all the way through conversion & discipleship to the consummation, to resurrection bodies, and to the new heaven & the new earth.”—D.A. Carson]. {The Outline below was adapted from John Stott & D.A. Carson}. THE GOSPEL is Christ-Centered & Theological: therefore Live & Preach a Christ-Centered Faith. THE GOSPEL is Biblical & Apostolic: therefore Think Biblically about the Gospel (see Acts 7:1ff; 13:13ff; Galatians 3:1ff); and Heed the Preaching of the Gospel. THE GOSPEL is Universal & Personal: therefore Believe God’s Life-changing Truth and Power. THE GOSPEL is Historical & Eschatological (Eschatological refers to the 2nd Coming of Christ, the overthrow/end of evil, and the ushering in of Christ’s kingdom): therefore Persevere in the Gospel by Faith.
