School days were filled with tests that required preparation. The cost for failing to prepare was a bad grade, maybe even a failing grade, and a class that had to be retaken. But tests didn’t end with graduation. Now the tests are less formal, the stakes are usually a lot higher, but they still require preparation. But we often don’t consider the preparation needed in our relationship with God. Today in our story in Exodus, as Israel gathers at the mountain, God sends word by Moses to prepare to experience God on the mountain. In a great demonstration of power and glory, God came, and in so doing he was teaching his people that he was not to be approached lightly, but rather with care, with reverence, and with fear. Today, God is still the same as he was when he appeared on the mountain. Are we taking him serious?
