One further reason to teach the church about the nature of these sins is so that they can “nip in the bud†any potential weeds in our own hearts that are like any of these sins—not just to identify the wolf, but to make sure that we do not raise up wolves among ourselves.

Imagine a culture that is in love with itself; a culture that pursues wealth and pleasure at all costs. Now place in that culture two predominant types of Christians: one that is trying to impose all kinds of rules on its people and one that is indistinguishable from the world around them. Does this culture sound familiar? You guessed it: it's the ancient Island of Crete. But it could be us, couldn't it? And just like the Island of Crete, we are called to live a lifestyle that is neither legalistic nor ungodly.
