The Vital Connection
As Jesus draws near to the cross, He encourages His disciples so that they will continue to believe in the face of difficult times. IN John 15 He begins to draw a line in the sand and tell them that their being Jewish is not enough to be God's people. It is not about their religion or their heritage but they must have a vital connection to God through Him. He is the "true Vine" and they are the branches and the way to know that they are truly in Him is by the fruit that is produced in their lives. How's your fruit?

From the Father: Faith, Friends, and Fruit
Because Jesus is the true Vine, and we are the branches, our calling is to stay connected to him, loving one another just as he has loved us. This is God's agape love - that holy, self-giving, sacrificial love. This love comes from the Father, is given to us through the Son, and moves out through Christ's people as we show and express this holy love, not just in words, but in action. Jesus calls us his friends - not servants, but friends. Because he has loved us literally unto death (his death upon the cross), his love sets us free to produce the fruits of faith: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. This is our calling in Christ.

Espalier
One of the hardest lessons about gardening is that sometimes you have to pull out living, blooming plants in order to have a healthy garden. It's counter-intuitive, but all of that thinning and pruning involves pulling out or cutting off live plants, not just deadwood. Jesus says that his disciple-branches weren't cosen to be burned up, we were chosen to bear fruit - and bearing good frut involves pruning.

Grow [a journey towards Christlikeness] : The Command
In this first message in our series on spiritual growth, we take John 15:1-17 as a our launching point. In this well-known passage, Jesus tells us plainly that we cannot do anything apart from him and that we are to abide in Him. But what does it look like to “abide?” The goal of this series is to unpack what it means to abide and grow in Christ.
