Becoming New In The Attitude Of Your Mind
Becoming New In The Attitude Of Your Mind
Three reactions to truth
Last week we saw that the religious leaders were motivated by fear, anger and jealousy in their arrest of the Apostles. We also saw that the Apostles were operating out of the motivation of simply obeying God rather than men and trusting God to take care of them. I. The religious leader’s response to The Apostle’s words A. They were enraged and wanted to kill them (vs. 33) B. Gamaliel became a voice of reason that day (vs. 34) 1. He was a Pharisee 2. He was a teacher of the law 3. He was respected by all the people 4. He asked for the Apostles to be put outside II. Gamaliel’s speech A. He warned the council against what they were about to do (vs. 35) B. Remember Theudas? (vs. 36) 1. A while back he rose up claiming to be somebody 2. About 400 people joined him 3. He was killed – all who followed him dispersed and it came to nothing C. Then there was Judas the Galilean (vs. 37) 1. He rose up in the days of the census 2. Drew away some of the people after him 3. He was killed and all the people that followed him scattered D. Here is what I think we should do (vv. 38, 39) 1. Let these men alone 2. If what they are saying is of men it will fail 3. If it is of God you will not be able to overthrow them 4. You might even put yourselves in the position of opposing God E. They took his advice – sort of III. They called the Apostles back in (Acts 5:40) A. They charged them not to speak in the name of Jesus any more B. They beat them C. They let them go IV. So how did the Apostles react? A. They left the council rejoicing (Acts 5:41) 1. That they were worthy to suffer dishonor 2. That they were worthy to be beaten in the name of Jesus B. They kept teaching every day (Acts 5:42) 1. In the temple 2. House to house 3. They did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Messiah We need to know that when we speak the truth, some will violently hate it. Some won’t really care one way or the other what we think. Others though will be convicted by the Holy Spirit and believe. They are why we speak.
