Building a City Within the City: Fathers & Fighting (Nehemiah 13:23 – 31)
The book of Nehemiah is the story of one man who God called to lead a movement to restore the city of Jerusalem. The city of Jerusalem in the book of Nehemiah very closely resembles what the church is supposed to be. A light in a dark world, a voice calling out the culture to live life differently. Big Idea: Nehemiah lays out three things God calls men to be as followers of Jesus. These are non-negotiables for men. Building a City Within the City: Life & Work (Nehemiah 13:15 – 22)
The book of Nehemiah is the story of one man who God called to lead a movement to restore the city of Jerusalem. The city of Jerusalem in the book of Nehemiah very closely resembles what the church is supposed to be. A light in a dark world, a voice calling out the culture to live life differently. Big Idea: We need to get at the root of what is keeping us from entering into what Hebrews calls, “Gods-rest”, because the Sabbath is practicing bringing the kingdom of heaven to earth. It’s practicing God’s ideal for you. Sin in the City Part 2
Jesus, who bore the curse for us, also works thru us to call wayward Christians and churches back to faithfulness.
Exchanging Lies for Truth
The problem with Israel is our own, it is the gap between what we believe in theory and what we believe in practice. I may agree that God is sovereign (theoretical belief), but slip into deep anxiety when I am afraid or out of control (functional disbelief). What it means to grow in grace is to see the gap narrowed between what I confess to be truth and what I functionally believe in the moment. If it’s true that behind every sin is a lie, we are able to find a road out of the rut of despair and the feeling that our emotions and actions are inevitable. Nehemiah is helping us to see the path of hope in hopelessness, joy in the midst of suffering, and courage to fight our shame and disbelief.
Nehemiah "Building Lives" Part 4
The pull of this world will wind us down until we loose momentum. Today we play around with truth. Seeking truth outside of God is to make it our truth not Gods.Truth is truth like gravity on earth.
Blessed Are the Intolerant
In spite of being considered intolerant in our culture today, the Christian is to stand on truth and confront error. Those that are spiritually sensitive don't accept the cultural status quo, see things in a way that the culture see them, allow their companions to determine correctness, and allow the culture to dictate their convictions.
