Theology of Work – Created to Work

Genesis 2: caring for the earth and providing for themselves from the earth. God to work.

Genesis 3: work is distorted. Struggle in our work.

Struggle in our Work

Work is harder when:
We make it the means to an end.
We try to get our meaning and purpose from it apart from God.
We bring feelings of entitlement to work.

Some of us feel trapped in a dead-end job:
Ephesians 6:5-9 How you work is as important as the work you do
Indentured servitude: debt, school loans, credit cards, etc. Can drag you in front of the judge.
Sometimes do what we have to do so we can do what we want to do.

Christ's Work

Yes, work can be hard, but we are not alone, Christ entered our world and worked to bring us purpose and renewal in our work.

Ephesians 2:8-10 We are God's workmanship created for good works

So what does Monday look like?

Work well, knowing that you serve God in your work.

Know that work will be hard sometimes, don't add entitlement or laziness to it.

Know that getting caught up in debt puts an extra burden on work.

Remember to rest (physically and spiritually) – Deuteronomy 5:13-14
