Wholly Desire

“You have heard that it was said…but I say to you…” Over and over again in the sermon on the mount, Jesus is inviting us to move deeper than just following the letter of the law. He wants to transform us from the inside out. He tells us that just because we don’t murder someone doesn’t mean that our relationship with them is right and good. Likewise, just because we don’t commit adultery with someone doesn't mean that all is rightly ordered in our relationship with them. Calling us to a deep inner goodness, Jesus invites us to a life where we don’t objectify each other to fulfill our own desires.

Anger Danger

According to Jesus, the road between anger and murder is shorter than we imagine. That’s why Jesus says that anger, and what we do with it, is so dangerous. The way we treat each other matters to God. In fact, reconciliation and peace between people matters so much to God that Jesus says it’s more important than our worship. As Jesus does over and over in the sermon, he calls us to be a new kind of humanity - the kind of people who let love triumph over anger.

The Heart of the Law

Jesus calls us to a righteousness that is deeper than that of the Pharisees and teachers of the Law…one that is truer to the heart of the Law. He uses a key phrase over and over in this part of the sermon to show us what it means to live in deeper ways: “You have heard that it was said…but I say to you.” Jesus is calling us to a deep inner goodness that goes to the depths of our heart.

Salt and Light

After speaking God’s blessing over us, Jesus reminds us of our identity as kingdom people in the world. He calls us salt and light. The power of us being salt and light means that we stand out from the world, but it also means that we engage the world and make it better. If we have one without the other, we aren’t being who we were called to be.

On Your Side

Jesus really does believe that we can live out the way of life he describes in the Sermon on the Mount, but he knows that none of it is possible until we know we're under the blessing of God. That's why he doesn't begin his most important teaching with commands, but instead with blessings. These "beatitudes" are not first and foremost steps on "how to get God's blessing and favor." No, first and foremost, this is an announcement: To everyone who has no reason to believe that God would be on your side...the Kingdom of God is open to you...God is on your side.
