Starting With the End in Mind

"May you be covered in the dust of your Rabbi..." For nearly two thousand years, the church has wrestled with and practiced the way of Jesus taught in the Sermon on the Mount. The words of Jesus are not just ideas to think about or agree with. Rather, his teaching is a life to be lived. At the end of the sermon, Jesus places no emphasis on understanding but instead on doing. By living these teachings Jesus gives us incredible and abundant life. He even promises that if we practice the commands and teach others to do so, we will be called "great in the kingdom of heaven." So the question for us is not, "Are we capable of living this way?" The better question is, "Will we try?"

We Believe in More Than Belief

We Believe many things...and beliefs matter. But God isn't just calling us to believe a set of propositions. Faith isn't isolated to the mind or to a list of doctrines. Jesus calls us to a way of life. We are followers, not just believers. We are apprentices to the master Jesus, not merely thinkers or those who agree with his teachings. The Christian life is an invitation to let our beliefs move us into passionate and faithful living.

We Believe in the Return of Christ to Judge the Living and the Dead

Judgement. Christians are all too often (and fairly) accused of being too judgmental. No one likes to be judged, but we all long for justice: for the world to be put right, for evil to be dealt with. We long for someone with the power and the virtue to stand up and proclaim once and for all in the face of evil, "Enough!" And the good news is that, in contrast with our petty and self-righteous human judgments, God is a righteous judge. His judgement is true and good. This invites us to hope in God's promise that Jesus will come again to judge the living and the dead. And it invites us, in the present, to live and act in the power of love.

We Believe in the Resurrection

We Believe in the Resurrection. The tomb of Jesus of Nazareth is empty. "He is the firstborn from among the dead. First-born. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you." (Rom. 8:11) The great Christian hope is not a disembodied, non-material future existence, but rather an embodied, incarnational life with God in the New Creation. This belief invites us to work redemptively in our current world as we anticipate God's glorious future that awaits.
