The Agony of Self Knowledge and the Joy of Sins Forgiven

Simon the Pharisee had invited Jesus to his home for a meal. He didn’t give Jesus the usual courtesies accorded to respected guests but during the meal a woman who was a known sinner stood at Jesus feet, anointed his feet with oil and wiped his feet with her tears and hair. Simon’s self-righteous pride is contrasted with the woman’s humble acknowledgement of her sin and gratitude to Christ. It has been truly said that for the Christian doctrine is grace and ethics is gratitude.
