Psalm 1

Psalm 1:1-3 Blessed is the man Our society today is dominated by a frantic pursuit of happiness. Any small success proves fleeting, elusive and unsubstantial. Psalm 1 details God’s way to lasting, deeply satisfying happiness that increases until it is perfected in the unspeakable joy of God’s immediate presence. Psalm 1 gives us the secret, first negatively – what the blessed man is not – and then positively, how this happiness is attained. If as believers we are not experiencing the joy of the Lord we need to examine our lives for the negatives and put into practise the positive, to delight in and meditate on the Word of God day and night. Questions: 1. We sing ..”it was there by faith I received my sight and now I am happy all the day”. Is it true that a believer is always happy? 2. How do we define the happiness spoken of in Psalm 1? What is the joy of the Lord? To what extent do the Beatitudes help us understand this blessedness? How can a Christian be happy in times of grief and suffering? 3. What is the focus of our meditation? What sort of effort is needed to meditate? 4. Examine your own life in the light of the negatives. What influence does the world have on me? Is this the reason for my lack of joy? How disciplined are we to “chew the cud” of God’s Word? What idols prevent me from spending time with God?
