God Won’t Give Me More than I can Handle

Sermon Notes

Most often this idea comes for a misinterpretation of 1 Corinthians 10:13
The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure. (NLT)

At first glance this Half Truth is what this verse seems to say.  But the context is immorality and idolatry, not trials and hardships.

  • Temptation. It is real. The problem isn’t that God fails to provide a way out of temptation it’s that when a way appears we usually don’t pursue it. —Adam Hamilton

Where this Half Truth misses the mark is when we talk about trials and hardships.

  • “God won’t give you…” this goes back to week one of our sermon series.  Does God give you hardships?  Does God give you trials?  We don’t believe in a God that pulls us by a string.  We believe in a God who gives us the power to make decisions and choices.

The promise of Scripture (Psalm 46) is not that we won’t go through hard times. What scripture does promise is that at all times, good and bad, God is with us and wants to be our help and strength.
