The Proof of Our Hope: God's Love (Romans 5:5-8)
Our hope is secure as long as God loves us. God will never stop loving us; therefore we are secure in Him for eternity! Paul communicates his desire for us to experience God's love through the work, power and filling of the Holy Spirit. Paul also lays out the objective proof of God's love -- He sent his son to die on the cross, while we were weak, sinners, enemies. The outcome of this is that God will never reject us. If he loved us while we were weak, sinners, enemies, how much more will he love us now that He has clothed us with His righteousness? We need not fear that we will lose God's love for us. And we can cultivate our understanding and experience of this love as we remember and study the cross.

Keeping Perspective in Suffering (Romans 5:3-5)
As Christians we are to rejoice in our trials and sufferings because 1) they are part of God's agenda for us, 2) God will use them to forge a Christian hope in us, and 3) God will use them to forge a certain hope in us. Though we are tempted to disorientation and despair during times of suffering and trial, we can surely trust in God's promises and love to sustain us through trials, and even to bring a Godly rejoicing and hope in the midst of them.

Why We Rejoice (Romans 5:2)
Joy should characterize Christians. It should be based on something deeper than temporal circumstances; it should be based on the person and work of Jesus Christ on the cross.

The Hope of the Resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:58)
Our view of Christ's work and our work should reflect 1 Corinthians 15. The emphasis is on Christ's work: 1) Christ's resurrection motivates and empowers our work; 2) Christ's resurrection secures our resurrection; and 3) Christ's resurrection fuels hope for this life. Because of Christ's work, we can be steadfast, immovable, and abounding in the work the Lord has for us.

Why the Local Church? (Ephesians 4:11-16)
In God's design, the local church is to serve as 1) a place to hear God's word preached and applied in a systematic way; 2) a place to put our commitment to God, and to one another, into practice; 3) a context for us to mature; 4) a place to discover and practice our ministry and spiritual gifts with perspective and leadership; 5) a protection from doctrinal error; 6) a place to demonstrate the gospel; and 7) a place to preserve and cultivate the fruit of the gospel.

Expansion Fund III (Philippians 4:14-20)
Phil gives an update on the expansion project at the beginning of its third and final year, setting out the opportunities that lie before us in this last year. We see that our giving serves as an encouragement to others, an investment in the future, and a sacrifice to God. In addition, we can draw encouragement from the fact that God is our loving and caring Father who will provide for all of our needs.

The Gift of Community (1 John 1:1-7)
Christian community is built around our shared experience of the gospel. Community always begins with God, and God gives us community as a means of transforming our lives more and more into the image of his son. However, community is not merely a tool for growth, but also a gift from God for our joy as well as for our good.

Masculine Spirituality (Joshua 1:8-9)
God intends for men to invest ourselves in the lives of others, working for his purposes rather than our own. We are to influence others for good, helping them to understand and pursue Christ-likeness. This begins with our families, but extends to God's church and also to the unbelievers that God has placed in our lives. Our serving others requires selfless sacrifice on our part, but God will provide us the grace and strength to be faithful to our calling as we obey.

Peace With God (Romans 5:1)
The natural man is at war with God. However, in Christ, the war is over -- we have peace with God!

The Nature of Faith (Romans 4:13-25)
Paul references the promises of God to Abraham, the ultimate fulfillment of which is the restoration of fellowship with God and the establishment of God's kingdom in the new heavens and new earth. Abraham and his descendants will be heirs of the world. Paul clearly demonstrates that it was not obedience that secured this promise to Abraham, but Abraham's faith in God and God's grace toward Abraham. Works and reward are utterly opposed to faith and promises. Just as with Abraham, we do not inherit God's promises by obedience or lineage, but we inherit God's promises by faith in God. We too will experience restoration of fellowship with God, and will participate in his eternal kingdom!
