United for a Purpose (1 Corinthians 1:10-17)
Paul appeals to the Corinthians to walk in unity. Pride was creating factionalism in the Corinthian church. Humility was the answer; a humility that embraces the ugliness and offense of the cross. In the face of the cross and the gospel there is no room for our pride, because they highlight that we have nothing good in ourselves.

Hope in Weakness (Romans 8:26-27)
We are weak -- we are weak because of our sin, but we are also weak simply because we are limited, dependent, finite creatures. This weakness reveals itself in our prayers, as well. Even if we pray without distraction, we "do not know what to pray for as we ought." But Paul encourages us that we have the Holy Spirit who intercedes for us in our prayers. And we can have confidence that the Holy Spirit's intercession is perfect because he has perfect knowledge.

Pursuing Growth in Godliness (2 Peter 1:1-11)
Peter reminds us that Jesus has secured our faith, righteousness, grace, forgiveness, and sanctification. Grounded in this, he urges us to persevere and grow in godliness, in the completely sufficient power and grace that Christ has provided.

Our Partnership in the Gospel (Philippians 4:10-20)
The Philippians serve as a model for us of a joyful partnership in the gospel. A significant aspect of this partnership was their giving to support Paul's ministry and to provide for the needs of the church in Jerusalem. This partnership met practical needs, helped to cultivate a unity in the gospel, and required sacrifice on their part.

The Hope of All Creation (Romans 8:18-25)
Suffering is a very real part of our experience in the "not yet" of God's kingdom. We will certainly encounter suffering. God provides many comforts and helps to us in our suffering, including the Holy Spirit, fellow believers, and the hope that we have. We can also gain encouragement by seeing God's purposes in suffering, both for us individually and also for creation. God calls us to endure our suffering in hope, and we can be sure that he cares about us in our suffering.

The Witness of the Spirit (Romans 8:16-17)
The pillar of our security and assurance in our salvation is the gospel. Do you know, understand and believe the gospel? Are you actively and persistently putting your faith in Christ? Here is your primary assurance that you belong to Christ. In addition to this primary means of assurance, we may also draw assurance from the fact that the gospel and word and Spirit are at work in our lives producing the fruit of the Spirit; and from our experience of God's peace and comfort and nearness in the Spirit.

The Spirit of Adoption (Romans 8:15)
We ought to rejoice that we have received the Spirit of adoption. It is a past and finished work. This brings us joy because it is something we receive by grace; otherwise we could never earn or deserve it. It brings us joy because our adoption is accompanied by all the blessings of God. And it brings us joy because we receive the relationship, affection and care of our Father.
