The Liberation of the Sinner (Romans 8:2)

Apart from the Spirit, our experience with the law is governed by our sin. Even though we may agree with the law in our minds, our slavery and bondage to sin causes us to disobey the law -- and in fact, sin allows itself to be incited by the law to greater disobedience, leading only to death. However, as those who are in Christ, we have the Holy Spirit at work in us, giving us life and empowering us to overcome sin. The Spirit sets us free from any power other than Christ that would rule over us. Unlike the unbeliever in Romans 7, the Christian is never said to be wretched; instead, the Christian is said to be a new creation, an overcomer, one who is free and victorious. As believers, the reason that we sin is not because we are still in bondage to sin; the reason we sin is because we refuse to walk in and find our strength in the Spirit. We will walk in victory as we walk in the Spirit.

The Justification of Sinners (Romans 8:1)

Paul turns in Romans 8 to consider the amazing privileges of the justification that he has spelled out in the preceding chapters. The sinner's cry for deliverance at the end of Romans 7 is answered in this: in Christ there is no condemnation. We review the nature of our sin and guilt, the wonderful goodness of God in providing propitiation and reconciliation for us, and finally how this comes about -- through our union with Christ.

The Desperately Divided Soul (Romans 7:13-25)

In Romans 6, Paul exhorted us to live as those who have truly died to sin, been set free from it, and now made slaves of righteousness to God. In Romans 7, Paul takes a bit of a detour. He wants first to show that the law is not faulty, and second to set up a contrast that magnifies the blessing that we have in Christ and in the Spirit. So he takes a step back to consider what our life was before our salvation, apart from Christ and the Spirit. Speaking of those "living in the flesh," for whom sin was still master, and in whom sin is still producing death, Paul asks the question, "who will deliver me from this body of death?" This hopelessness and death sets up the contrast that Paul will later make clear in Romans 8. Already in the final verse of chapter 7, we see his answer to this question: Christ Jesus our Lord. In the coming weeks in Romans 8 we will see the riches of what we have in Christ and in the Spirit: life, no condemnation, power to put sin to death, adoption, hope of future glory, God's wise and good care for us, and his love and nearness. Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!

Law and Sin (Romans 7:7-12)

God’s purpose for the law is to reveal sin in our lives and to bring conviction of sin when we have failed to obey the law’s command. The presence and power of sin in the life of the unbeliever when confronted with the law produces even more sin. The only acceptable way to resolve our miserable condition under law with sin is to savingly believe the gospel and place our trust in Jesus Christ. Only He can remove this just condemnation by His vicarious atonement on the cross.

In Christ and through his death we have been released from the law and are now freed to live and serve by the Spirit.

Who Will You Serve? (Romans 6:20-23)

Paul continues his argument that there are only two types of people -- those for whom sin is master and those for whom God is master. You will be a slave to one or the other. On the one hand, slavery to sin may yield temporary pleasure, but its fruit is full of shame and ultimately produces only death. On the other hand, slavery to God produces the fruit of the Spirit, sanctification, and ultimately eternal life. This is ours, as a free gift from God, and we who have received life are fools to return to the old master, sin, who can give us only shame and death.
