Hope for the Mistreated

Further Reflection, Discussion, and Application
  1. Begin your discussion (or reflection) by thinking about 'hope'. Here are a few prompts to get you going. What do you think of when you think of 'hope'? How would you define it? When have you most needed it? When has hope been strong in you? Why is hope listed as one of the enduring virtues in 1 Corinthians 13:13?
  2. Sometimes we read shocking things in the Bible – Genesis 16 is just one of those examples. How is the absence of hope evident in this chapter? How is the offer of hope evident in this chapter?
  3. Hagar was "mistreated" (v6), so she ran. Where have you found hope in the midst of mistreatment?
  4. What do you see about God in his dealing with Hagar?
  5. Hagar identifies God as the One who "sees me" (3 times in v13, 14). Do you believe that God sees you (Heb 4:13)?
  6. What difference did God's seeing make to Hagar? What difference does God's seeing make to you?
  7. Pray for the cultivation of hope in God's seeing.
