“Fish, Fishing, Forgiveness, and Pharisees”
Luke 5:12-26
Key Verse: “’But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins....’ He said to the paralyzed man, ‘I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.’” Luke 5:24 (NIV)
1. Fish live in constant danger, 5:8-9.
2. Fish are skittish. The existential reality of God should cause us to feel and understand the grave danger we are in, 5:8-9.
3. Fish need love, 5:12-13.
The fact that Jesus loves sinners is not intuitively apparent.
Every Bible verse is meant to be read under the shadow of what Jesus did for us on the cross. Or to put it still another way, the four gospels—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John—are meant to be read backwards. It’s the watermark, the shadow on the white board, the underlying gossip, the unspoken but known quantity that covers all the stories and commands.
4. Fishing takes focus, 5:14-16.
5. Fishing means forgiving, 5:20-24.
Could there be anything more obvious than forgiveness?
6. Forgiveness causes rejoicing, 5:15, 25, 26.
