“The Kingdom of God is a Party”

Part II

Luke 5:30-39

Key Verse:  “And Jesus answered and said to them, ‘It is not those who are well who need a physician, but those who are sick.  I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.’”  Luke 5:31-32  (NAS)

1. The invitation list: anybody, especially notorious sinners or outcasts, 5:27-32.

2. The party invite.  Inviters must be accommodating and characteristically compassionate and gracious.  There must be no hierarchies, or exclusionary actions; there are no social boundaries or secret transactions, 5:27-33.

3. Party pass and dress code: repentance, 5:32.

4. Party crashers: hypocrisy, legalism, and a critical spirit, 5:30, 33, 39.

5. FAQs (frequently asked questions).

Why don’t I feel comfortable at the party any more?  The party rules have changed.  It’s not the rules that are so important but the host.  You must keep your party pass handy, 5:33-39.

What can I do to fit in better?  Work indefatigably to understand Jesus and the new ways He brings: externals and internals, programs and purposes, style and substance.  Dress appropriately.

Can anyone come to the party?  Of course.

Can I invite anyone?  Only those who you have some intimacy, kinship and unity with.  Especially those who will stick out like sore thumbs at the party initially.
