The Widow's Might

A poor widow puts in her last two coins, an act of devotion, perhaps of desperation, but at the heart of it, an act of trust in the only One who cares for her, about her - her God. Jesus compares this as an offering that far surpasses the costly offerings given out of much abundance. That will hardly be missed. She gave her entire being to God.

Vital Organs in an Era of Artificial Substitutes

Jesus, answering the question of "which is the Greatest Commandment", describes the two "Vital Organs" to keep faithfulness alive: Love of God, first of all, and Love of Neighbor. In quoting these two verses from the Hebrew Scriptures, Jesus points us toward a faith that incorporates both as essential.

Come See the Man God Sent Us

The healing of the blind man Bartimaeus serves as a bookend with the healing of a blind man in Mark chapter 8, with Jesus trying teach his Disciples the meaning of discipleship in between. They truly do NOT get what he is saying, because they dream of glory and he is predicting sacrifice and service, even to the Cross. But a blind beggar sitting by the side of the road and hearing the great crowd following Jesus knows who Jesus really is - the One sent by God. Even though he is told to "be quiet", he calls all the more. Jesus hears him. Jesus heals him. He follows. Good example for us all!

Jesus says "Do You Know Who I Am?"

Even though Jesus has just told the Disciples (for the third time) about his impending crucifixion and resurrection, they are still fixated on Power! James and John ask to be on Jesus' right and left hand, in the Kingdom, not knowing what they are truly asking to receive. Jesus tells them that they WILL drink his cup and be baptized as he is, but that to be the Greatest, you must choose to be the Least and the servant of all.
