For Advent 2011, we look at the Christmas story through the lens of C.S. Lewis' Narnia series - this week, we see Christmas as a great reversal of how power and prominence work in the world.
It seems strange to be thankful for what is to come, but it is not that foreign of a concept, because that is what hope is! But biblically, our hope is not in this world and what it offers, but in heaven, an increasingly forgotten and ignored concept in the modern church. How do we reclaim our celebration of heaven, and our hope?
Being thankful for our present, everyday reality can be very difficult because nothing seems so outstanding about our present - it's difficult to be thankful for the humdrum times of life. But this is not the truth, that even in the present, we have every reason to be deeply grateful unto God.
We begin a new sermon series for the month of November, looking at how we can be more thankful for our past, present and future.
Up to this point, we have been focusing on factors beside God - the red herrings that fake us out, the busyness of our lives. But now we focus on God himself, and what we realize is that part of the reason why we do not find God is because in some way...we are looking for the wrong God.
