Genesis 1:1-2:3 Creation: From Chaos to Calm
0 Amens
The creation account in Genesis 1 is one of the most controversial and disputed texts in all of scripture. Far too often, the text is misused and misunderstood because the context is lost. The focus of Genesis is not really the creation event but the Creator of creation and the family and land that He created.
Moses wrote Genesis to describe the 'beginnings' of God's family. He describes the beginnings of the universe from the lens of the covenant people. His desire is not to give a detailed account of the beginnings of the universe nearly as much as to define and describe for the nation of Israel their beginnings. The Text can be broken down as follows:
- 1:1 - Creation defined: There is a Creator.
- 1:2 - Condition of earth/Context during creation: Formless & Void
- 1:3-10 God Forms the Land
- 1:11-31 God Fills the Land
- 2:1-3 God Frolics in the Land
Or
- God Prepares the Land
- God Plants the Land
- God Populates the Land
- God takes Pleasure in the Land
This text, while teaching about creation, teaches us much more about the Creator.
- God Sees
- God Speaks
- God Sanctifies
The nature of God moves Him to transform chaos into calm.
