A Study of Exodus
29 Devine Worship part 1 “God with Us”
Michael Wiley
August 24, 2008
Exodus 25-27, 36-37
Introduction:
Video – Hammered – You don’t need to know what he is saying to be impressed by what he is doing. It seems there is more than one way to drive a nail.
We are talking about the building of the tabernacle today. They didn’t have nails per say but it always intrigues me by the skill and craftsmanship they did have.
My dad has always been a craftsman. He added on to his house – closet ---
Transition:
As we hit the text I want you to see that God’s greatest reason for the tabernacle is to be with his “sinful” people. --- Garden, sin separated – now He will dwell with them again.
Why Important?
1. 50 chapters of the Bible are used to describe it
2. It was the “dwelling” place of God.
3. It gives us a picture of God’s redemptive plan.
4. The book of Hebrews calls it, “An illustration for the present time” (9:9) and “a copy of the true one” (9:24) – Ex 25:9 – “Exactly Like the Pattern I will show you.”
5. It shows us the criteria to approach God – you decide, you’re God. Helps us better understand how Christ met that criteria
Text it ----
Exodus 25 ff
Ex 24 - God calls Moses into His presence and firsts, ask him to take up an offering:
- Gold, Silver, Bronze…
Ex 25:10ff.
Construction of Tabernacle
Description --- In to out
I’m going to describe rather than read the text to avoid the intricate details, and I’m going to give you approximates in Feet. The Bible gives the dimensions in a cubit (tip of middle finger – to elbow)
One cubit = 18 inches or 1 ½ ft.
Acacia is darker and harder than Oak and very rot resistant ---- Barns…
It’s top was one solid piece of Gold with two cherubim on top, facing each other with wings spread inward.
One of the primary reasons for worship is meeting with God. The ark was where God dwelt – in the space.
Alternate Pictures of
Worship here at The Vine --- ALL is worship – I pray as you walk in the door… May everything we do be worship to Him. People young and old say ---- This happened that happened – I couldn’t worship! Worship is not outside-in --- It is Inside-out… It’s a heart issue. --- comes from the heart.
Table of Presence – 3 feet long by 11/2 ft. wide by 27” high – Acacia wood overlaid with gold.
On the table would be 12 loaves of bread symbolizing the 12 tribes of
Alter of Incense – 3 ft.. high by 18” square – acacia wood overlaid with gold. Incense were the prayers of the people.
Golden Lamp Stand – patterned after a almond tree – a talent of pure gold = about 70 lbs. Friday, August 22 at 11:30 am gold was 825.35 per oz. --- this means the gold would cost us $924,392.00
Oil for Lamps – Oil pressed from unripe olives
Show Picture of Holy place Here
Tabernacle Walls – 20 wall boards on each side 15’ long by 2/1/4 ‘ wide made of Acacia overlaid with gold, sitting in silver sockets
Cloth Covering - Fine linen with Cherubim (blue purple and scarlet).
Blue came from the die of a shell-fish
Purple came from the secretion gland of the murex snail
Scarlet came from the eggs and bodies of a worm I cannot pronounce
Goat hair, Ram’s skins (dyed red), and Sea cows (Porpoises)

Bronze Laver – NO size but was made with the polished brass mirrors the women brought with them from
Bronze Alter – 7 ½ ft. square and 4 ½ ft. high, acacia wood overlaid with Bronze
Courtyard – 150 ft. long by 75 ft. wide Back of the tab was West --- Entered from the East
7 ½ ft. high, Acacia posts sat in Bronze bases
Next Slide Here – Laver, Alter, Courtyard
Construction --- Out to In
Chapter 31 tells us God chose two men to be the general contractors and designers, using the skill He gave them.
The Tabernacle was a moving picture at the same time telling us how to approach God and pointing toward the coming Messiah
They didn’t have movie theaters back then… late 1880s first figured it out
Our approach is out to in
Can’t Approach God without blood
Adam and Eve – after they sinned…
Cain and Able – Able offered a blood sacrifice
Noah – Built an Alter and sacrificed to God
Abram – Abram sacrificed regularly to God and was called to make the ultimate sacrifice of his son. Abram got it! He said, The Lord will provide the Lamb for the burnt offering (Gen 22:8).
Lamb person would bring the lamb, place his hands on its head, kill it. – Alter – Laver
Priest would collect the blood, put it on the horns of the alter, then burn the body on the alter
Christ is our Lamb ---- The Holy Spirit continually sanctifies us.
Conclusion:
Blood of Christ = once and for all
Heb 10:22-23
22 let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.
23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.
