Hell

Hell!

Luke 16:19-31

There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day. But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, full of sores, who was laid at his gate, desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off and Lazarus in his bosom.

“Then he cried and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.’ But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented. And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.’

“Then he said, ‘I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father’s house, for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.’ Abraham said to him, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.’ And he said, ‘No, father Abraham; but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ But he said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.’”

Tonight I’m going to talk to you on the subject of Hell. The subject that seems hardest in the Holy Scriptures to grasp. And the subject that people that fake spiritual maturity pretend to grasp and understand.

But please honour this earthen vessel tonight and listen to the things that God has revealed to me in the last few weeks. It’s valuable to understand that my lips are of clay and I could never speak the things He speaks to me with the power He says them. Even If I quote Him word for word it can never have the same effect. So please try and imagine the things I'm going to say to you tonight as though the God of the universe was echoing them in your heart.

For when God begins speaking to you on the subject of Hell everything changes.

Your prayer life changes, your conversation with the unbeliever changes, your evangelism becomes so much more urgent and your heart burns for the lost night and day.

I must admit before I make any progress, that Hell is the one biblical truth I would scrub out of the bible in an instant if I had the choice.

It has been quoted that Jesus spoke more on hell than heaven by many preachers and so I thought I’d research it. This is in fact untrue with the topic of heaven making almost four times more appearances in the gospels than hell.

This is severely inconsequential if Jesus only spoke about hell once than it deserves to be a subject and truth that’s branded upon the hearts of every person who claims to love and obey God.

Permit me for a moment to share some facts regarding hell.

1. Hell is separation from God

2. Hell is forever

3. Hell is self elected

4. Hell is The only other option from heaven

5. The only English word that ventures close enough to accurately describing Hell is the word Fire. (Though eternally un consuming)

………………………………………………………………………...

Now the formalities are over I’m going to share some of the things that God has placed in my heart about hell.

§     Hell should be as much a torment to Christians alive as it is to the unbeliever dead!

And until this is the case we will never stop the landslide of sinners into the pit of eternal destruction.

Until our prayer meetings here on Earth match the intensity of those in hell right now than we'll have to be satisfied with the petty progress we make and indeed we are petty in comparison.

Just imagine Jesus’ face at the judgment when He asks you for an account for the life you were supposed to spend saving sinners from their sin, and your reason for the negligence you've shown is

“Oh sorry about that Jesus, I much preferred to use the life you gave me to: eat, drink and party while your dear children must suffer eternally to pay for my irresponsible philandering.”

Watch His face; stare close into His eyes, as you tell Him that the people that were worth His death were not worth your life.

Sometimes God gives me an alarming revelation of what my heart will feel if my immediate family end up there.

My twin brother or my mother or father, my own flesh and blood burning eternally in a lake of fire. And my heart starts a panic and I feel ill and start to weep and beg Him to intervene and do something.

I have been getting dreams lately:

§     Mike

§     Mum

Do you ever think about that?

The thing is that Christ loves every single solitary person infinitely more then I do my own family yet every minute people are swallowed up in death and torment.

I feel such a sense of emergency in my heart about my immediate family and those who I love so dear. What if they would never acknowledge Christ and His saving grace until it’s too late.

So can you get a glimpse of how His heart must burn and twist in anguish as He sees multitudes of His beloved children slipping into hell eternally.

You must realise that He did all He could without removing people’s free will. He came suffered and died on a wooden cross. Under the pain and anguish of hell itself he provided a way for people to escape. Than He left you and I responsible for administering this vaccination.

"If you found a cure for cancer, wouldn't it be inconceivable to hide it from the rest of mankind? How much more inconceivable to keep silent the cure from the eternal wages of death." -- Dave Davidson

William Booth the founder of the Salvation Army was quoted as saying.

'Not called!' did you say?
'Not heard the call,' I think you should say.
Put your ear down to the Bible, and hear Him bid you go and pull sinners out of the fire of sin. Put your ear down to the burdened, agonized heart of humanity, and listen to its pitiful wail for help. Go stand by the gates of hell, and hear the damned entreat you to go to their father's house and bid their brothers and sisters and servants and masters not to come there. Then look Christ in the face -- whose mercy you have professed to obey -- and tell Him whether you will join heart and soul and body and circumstances in the march to publish His mercy to the world.

He also stated that he wished he could suspend every one of his preachers over hell for 24 hours so, as he put it:

"If they could see the flames and smell the smoke and feel the heat and hear the cries of the damned, they would go out to preach what they had seen and heard. They would then preach like dying men to dying world."
