My Heart, Christ's Home
(By Robert Munger)
"That [God] would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; that Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith"(Eph 3:16).
Sermon notes are provided below for the Sunday Service on October 18, 2009.
Who is the Holy Spirit?
(Part 1)
(Partial Outline Nikki Gumble)
THE HOLY SPIRIT IS A PERSON.
thinks (Acts 15:28)
speaks (Acts 1:16)
can be grieved (Ephesians 4:30)
can be lied to, resisted, and slandered (Matthew 12:31; Acts 5:3-9; 7:51)
teaches (John 14:26; 16:13)
guides and directs others (Acts 8:29; 10:19-20; 13:2; 16:6-7; Galatians 5:18; Romans 8:14; 2 Peter 1:20-21)
convinces unbelievers of their need to believe in Christ (John 16:8-11)
called a comforter or helper or advocate (John 14:16)
THE HOLY SPIRIT IS GOD.
is omnipresent (Psalm 139:7-12)
is omniscient (1 Corinthians 2:10-12)
is love (Galatians 5:22)
HE WAS INVOLVED IN CREATION.
'Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters' (Genesis 1:1-2).
'When God created humankind, he formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man become a living being' (Genesis 2:7).
HE CAME UPON PARTICULAR PEOPLE AT PARTICULAR TIMES FOR PARTICULAR TASKS.
'How can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family' (Judges 6: 15).
'The Holy Spirit of the Lord came upon him in power. The ropes on his arms became like charred flax, and the bindings dropped from his hands' (Judges 15:14).
'The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me because the Lord has anointed me to preach good news to the poor...to bind up the broken- hearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release for the prisoners 'and‘to comfort all who mourn' (Isaiah 61:1-3).
HE WAS PROMISED BY THE FATHER.
'I will put my laws in their minds and write it on their hearts' (Jeremiah 31:33).
'I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you,' he said. 'I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws' (Ezekiel 36: 26-27).
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your old men will dream dreams,
your young men will see visions.
Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days. (Joel 2:28-29)
'The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you' (Luke 1:35).
JOHN THE BAPTIST LINKS THE HOLY SPIRIT WITH JESUS.
'I baptise you with water. But one more powerful than I will come, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and with fire' (Luke 3:16).
'The Spirit of God descended on him in bodily form at his baptism' (Luke 3:22).
'He returned to the Jordan 'full of the Holy Spirit' and 'led by the Spirit in the desert' (Luke 4:1).
He returned to Galilee 'in the power of the Spirit' (v. 14).
In a synagogue in Nazareth he read the lesson from Isaiah 61:1, 'The Spirit of the Lord is on me...' and said. 'Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing' (v. 21).
JESUS PREDICTED HIS PRESENCE.
They looked forward to a time when water would pour out of the temple (as prophesied by Ezekiel), becoming deeper and deeper and bringing life, fruitfulness and healing wherever it went (Ezekiel 47).
'If anyone thirst, let him come to me and drink. He who believes in me, as the scripture has said, "Out of his heart shall flow rivers of living water"' (John 7:38, RSV).
'I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high' (Luke 24:49).
'You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you' (Acts 1:8).
Then at last on the Day of Pentecost: 'Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them' (Acts 2:2-4).
Jesus had 'received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit' and had 'poured out what you now see and hear' (Acts 2:33).
'The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off - for all whom the Lord our God will call'.
