We've Come This Far By Faith

The message begins with a testimony by Janet Headley, Trinity's longest attending member.

The message continues: How many of you were baptized here? Came to faith in Jesus Christ here? Have grown in your faith here?

How many helped build these buildings? Taught a Sunday school class? Served in a ministry to help others in need?

Married here? How many have found friends here? How many found help or hope here, meaning and purpose here?

How many of you are under the age of 70? You weren’t born when this congregation was founded. You are the legacy of our founders. You are their great work of God for a people yet unborn

Take it even further back. You are the legacy:

  • Founders of Methodism: Francis Asbury, Susanna, John, Charles Wesley...
  • The first followers of Jesus: Peter, Paul, Mary, Priscilla...
  • The Hebrew matriarchs and patriarchs: Ruth, Rahab, Esther, Abraham, David, Elijah...

Planting seeds illustration: I grow my veggies from starter plants. Seeds are a whole other level. You plan, plant, water, fertilize, watch, wait, tend, harvest. The same cycle, again and again, year after year.

Then there are legacy crops. Not the ones you plant every year, but the ones which continue to develop from the original planting- olives, grapes, citrus. You plant and tend and harvest and pass it down through the generations for a people yet unborn.

Here we are the fruit of other’s faithfulness. We are the harvest, the legacy. We are also the fruit of God's faithfulness. We come this far by faith.

We too can be faithful like those who have come before us. We can forgive because God forgives. We can love because God loves. We can be faithful because God is faithful.

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end - Lamentations 3:22

God's love and compassion are loyal, enduring, inexhaustible.

They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.- Lamentations 3:23

We sing the first two verses of “Great is Thy faithfulness”

“The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.”- Lamentations 3:24

We can, we will and we must be faithful in sharing the Good News for our generation and generations yet to hear and believe.
