Wearing Love, Filled with Christ (Col 3:14-17)

In the previous verses, Paul had taught us what qualities are to adorn us as Christians. Instead of wearing the old clothing of sinful habits, we are to put on the new clothing of kindness, humility, forbearance, and so forth. Now we shall see the final garment of clothing which we are to put on, which is love. Then Paul will tell us what we have in Christ. In verse 11, Paul wrote that “Christ is all, and in all.” All that belongs to Christ is ours. What we have in him is his peace, word, and worship.

A Flood of Wickedness (Gen 6:1-8)

Though many people think that humans contain a "spark of the divine," God gives a different assessment. He sees that the hearts of man are continually wicked. He flooded the earth with water only because the earth had already been flooded with wickedness. In these verses, we first see the spread of wickedness across the earth. Then we shall see the Lord’s assessment and judgment against this wickedness. But finally, we shall discover that there is salvation from the Lord’s just wrath.

Putting On the New (Col 3:10-14)

We have previously seen that which we are to put to death; we have seen what we are to put off. However, that leaves us naked so it is good to now see what we are to put on. It is not enough that we avoid sinning; we must also positively exhibit the righteousness of God. To give us a full picture of how we are to be in Christ, Paul first tells us what the new man is, and then he explains what the new man is to wear.

Two Family Trees (Gen 4:17-5:32)

All of human history can be seen as a conflict between two family trees. Scripture reveals this drama as an outworking of the promise that God made in Genesis 3:15, when he said to Satan, “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” Two family trees are given in Genesis 4:17 through 5:32. One of those family trees belongs to Cain, and therefore represents the offspring of the Serpent. The other family tree belongs to another son of Adam and Eve, Seth. This is the godly offspring of the woman. These two family trees are contrasted in this text, revealing the evil of the one and the faithfulness of the other.

Putting Off the Old (Col 3:5-10)

Our old man was put to death on the cross with Christ, and our new man is alive, hidden in Christ. We have new identities, which will always result in a changed life. Therefore, we are to put sin to death within us, including sins of perverted love and sins of wicked hate. The wrath of God lies upon sinners, but not upon those who have been made into new creatures. We are to put our sins to death because we have already taken off the old man and put on the new.
