God Cuts a Covenant (Gen 15:7-21)

Today we shall look further into the Abrahamic Covenant for it is in this chapter that God ratifies his oath. Before that ratification actually takes place, God explains his intentions to Abram, and this teaches us some of how God tends to deal with his people. He also explains why he deals with the wicked as he does. So this section not only teaches us about God the covenant maker; it also teaches us some other things about God as well.

Blessings for Losers (Part 2) (Matt 5:6-8)

As we go further into the Beatitudes, we shall hear the pronouncement of blessings upon those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, the merciful, and the pure in heart. It is not any kind of righteousness that he blesses, but the kind that he defines.

Justification by Faith (Gen 15:6)

Genesis 15:6 may be the most important verse in the entire Bible. In these few words we learn how Abram was saved, and how all men are saved. What this verse does is teach us the doctrine of justification by faith. The clear teaching of the New Testament is that if you are not justified by faith in Christ alone, then you are not justified at all; you are accursed, you are damned. Therefore, we must get this message into our bloodstream. In order to help us do that, Paul used Abraham as his exhibit A. “Do you want to know what it means to be justified by faith?” Paul was asking. “Then look at Abraham and Genesis 15:6. That will tell you what you need to know.”

Blessings for Losers (Part 1) (Matt 5:1-5)

Jesus began his Sermon on the Mount with a series of blessings pronounced upon those the world regards as losers. But we need to know more specifically who Jesus' target audience was. The second thing that we need to understand is the nature of the blessings. What does it mean to be blessed by God? After we have learned that, we shall begin to look at these beatitudes specifically. Today we will be focusing on the first three: blessed are the poor in spirit, blessed are those who mourn, and blessed are the meek.
