Our Shield and Very Great Reward (Gen 15:1-5)

In chapter 15 of Genesis, the Lord once again gives Abram a vision to bolster his faith. God allays Abrams fears, first by telling him that he is his shield. Then God tells Abram that he is his very great reward. However, Abram still has some confusion and so asks a question. He wants clarification about God’s promise. Yet within the essence of Abram’s question lies the answer, which is that he needs God to come to him.

The Sun Shines His Light (Matt 4:12-25)

John disappears from the scene as Jesus’ ministry comes to the forefront, his light eclipsing the lesser light of John. This text can be outlined into the following three points: The Sun rises, the Son gathers disciples, and the Son conquers. As the light of the world shone into a dark land he set the pattern for the church and his work among us for centuries to come.

The King Goes to War (Matt 4:1-11)

In his exposition of Matthew, the great Baptist preacher Charles Spurgeon titled this section “The King Begins His Reign by a Combat with the Prince of Darkness.” That is a very apt description of the temptation of Jesus. When he went into the wilderness, he did so to exercise his kingly power by defeating Satan where every other person in history had failed. In this way, Jesus began to free his people from the bondage of the dark one.

The Blessing of the Priest-King (Gen 14:18-24)

Who is Melchizedek? He is mentioned here in Genesis 14 as well as two other places of Scripture. As we aim to find out who Melchizedek was and what he did, we will gain greater insight into the person and work of our Lord Jesus Christ, which is our highest aim. We shall begin by first looking at this man that blessed Abram; finding out who he was, what he did, and how that impacted Abram. Then we shall look to see what the Scripture says about Jesus in relation to all of this and how that applies to us.

The Baptism of the King (Matt 3:13-17)

The full Trinity is on display in this text as all three persons of the Godhead manifest themselves in this important chapter of redemptive history. When the Son entered into those waters, he began his coronation service by identifying with the sinful people he came to save. When the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus, he empowered him to be a sinful people’s king. When God the Father spoke, he gave his benediction upon his Son, approving and authorizing him to do this saving work.
