The Birthday of a King (Matt 2:1-12)

In this account of the visit of the wise men, we see various responses to the birth of the king: a response of joy and worship, a response of hostility, and a response of indifference. Then we see the actual celebration of the birthday of a king with the exchange of gifts and what that means for us.

The City of God (Gen 12:1-9)

In the text before us, we see Abraham going out by faith to the place that he was to receive, the City of God. This section can be divided into two parts: the first is the covenant that God begins to make with Abram by which he calls him to a new land, and the second is Abram’s faithful response.

Jesus, God with Us (Matt 1:18-25)

Jesus was very special from start, and this is first seen in his supernatural beginning. Then as the name of the Lord is given, we learn about his work. He is Jesus, meaning “God saves.” We are then taken to great depths of mystery with the title given to Jesus, which is Immanuel, meaning “God with us.” Finally, we shall learn that this was not just true for Joseph and Mary, but that Jesus is still God with us.

Who Is Jesus? (Matt 1:1-17)

The Christmas season finds many pundits asking, "Who is Jesus?" Though their answers are usually always wrong, they are right to ask the question. The opening verses of Matthew's gospel provide and answer to that important question. Though the list of names that is written here may seem boring and worth skipping over, we would be missing out on much if we did. For in this genealogy we learn that Jesus is a real person, he is the Christ, he is the son of David, he is the son of Abraham, and he is the savior of sinners.

The City of Man (Gen 11:1-32)

Genesis chapter 11 illustrates a monumental attempt by man to build his own city and God’s judgment for that proud sin. Though man would be frustrated in his efforts, God’s purposes always stand firm. In the genealogy that follows the story about the tower of Babel, we are given a glimpse of God’s plan to bless us with his kingdom.
