Lesson # 207 – Jesus Raises Lazarus

  1. The Death of Lazarus (verses 1-16)
    1. Lazarus
      1. Name means “helped by God”
      2. Brother of Mary and Martha
    2. Jesus delayed traveling to see Lazarus who was dying
      1. Jesus acts according to God's plans, not human plans
      2. God delays for a reason so that others who come will believe in Him
    3. Lazarus sleeps
      1. Disciples misunderstood Jesus, so Jesus told them clearly that Lazarus was dead
      2. But, it is a good thing because God’s power will be demonstrated through Lazarus’ death
  2. I Am the Resurrection and the Life (verses 17-27)
    1. We die in two ways
      1. Spiritual death – by sinning
      2. Physical death – when spirit leaves the body
    2. Belief in Jesus means that we have life from our death in sins and physical death
    3. “Do you believe this?”
      1. Jesus always demands “yes” or “no”
      2. Jesus will not accept “maybe”
      3. If you believe, there is hope for eternal life
      4. If you don’t believe, there is no hope for eternal life
  3. Jesus and Death, the Last Enemy (verses 28-37)
    1. Shortest verse in the Bible
      1. Jesus wept. (John 11:35)
      2. Jesus felt compassion for those who were weeping
      3. He shares our tears and grief
    2. Death
      1. Some people fear it, dread it, fight against it, and some people see it as the ultimate enemy
      2. Jesus has power over death
        1. Jesus can raise people from the dead
        2. God is in control, NOT death
        3. We do not have to fear death because God is greater than death
  4. Lazarus Raised from the Dead (verses 38-44)
    1. Four days already that Lazarus has been dead
      1. Jesus has raised several people from dead before
      2. But none of them had been dead four days
    2. Jesus prays
      1. To thank the Father for the opportunity to display God’s glory to the people
    3. Jesus orders Lazarus to come out
      1. Lazarus cannot free himself
      2. Jesus orders to “Loose him, and let him go.”
  5. Application
    1. Jesus has come to free us from our tombs of sin and death
    2. Jesus sets us free and unbinds us from our sins
    3. He frees our stony hearts from the grip of sin and releases us to new life in God just as Lazarus was set free from his grave clothes
    4. All who believe in Jesus as the Christ, the Son of God, receive through Him the gift of eternal life
