Baptist Distinctives: Two Ordinances

Matthew 3:1-6

This morning I want to look at some things that set Baptists apart from all other groups within Christianity.

  • We are Baptists and there are some distinctives that identify us as such.
  • We have discussed our position on the Word of God
  • Now – another distinctive that we have is that we observe only two ordinances in the local church
  • They are the Lord’s Supper and Baptism

Last week we observed the Lord’s Supper.

  • We found it pictures the purity of the body and blood of Jesus Christ
  • It pictures for us the sacrifice that He willingly made to redeem mankind
  • And it reminds us that it not only points to the past and the blessings God shed on us
  • It reminds us of the present blessings which are being bestowed upon us
  • And finally, but not at all least – the Lord’s Supper points us to the second coming of Jesus Christ.

This morning’s message will focus primarily on the subject of Baptism in the New Testament

  • I believe that it is very important that we understand this matter
  • We will be considering four areas this morning: The History; The Purpose; The Results; and The Authority

FRIENDS - The Holy Spirit places great emphasis upon the New Testament.

  • The words: Baptist, baptism, baptize, and baptized are used a total of 113 times
  • For some it seems that baptism is a non-essential doctrine and practice
  • BUT – I believe that God’s Word makes it clear that it is NOT UNIMPORTANT!

 HISTORY OF BAPTISM

 A. Matthew 3:1-6

1)    The story of baptism begins with John the Baptist

2)   John was sent forth by God to baptize

3)   John the Baptist ushered in the Christian era

Luke 16:16 – “The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it.”

B. All Twelve Disciples Were Baptized By John The Baptist

NOTE: John 1:35-45 - Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples; 36And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God! 37And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. 38Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou? 39He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour. 40One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.

41He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.

42And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.43The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me. 44Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

45Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.

Acts 1:21-22 - Wherefore of these men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,

22Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection.

C. Jesus Was Baptized By John

1)    Jesus walked sixty miles to be baptized by John in the Jordan River

Matthew 3:13 - Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.

D. The First Christian Baptism

John 3:22  - “After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judaea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized.”

  • This is the first time in the N.T people were being baptized unto Jesus
  • John 4:1-2 makes it clear that Jesus did not baptize but his disciples

John 4:1-2 “When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John,

2(Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,)”

FRIENDS – Jesus commanded that baptism was to continue.

Matthew 28:19 – “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:”

E. Baptism continued through the Book of Acts

1)    The converts on the Day of Pentecost were baptized

Acts 2:41- Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

2)   The converts in the revival at Samaria were baptized

Acts 8:12 - But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.

3)   The Gentile converts were baptized in Acts 10:47-48

4)   Paul’s converts were baptized

  • Lydia in Acts 16:14-15
  • The Philippian jailor in Acts 16:33
  • Crispus in Acts 18:8

FRIENDS – Throughout the Book of Acts we find that all those who embraced Christianity were baptized

  • Throughout the epistles we find the early churches practiced baptism

PURPOSE OF BAPTISM

A. Baptism is a public confession of repentance and faith in Christ

1)    Those who repented and believed the message of John, Jesus Christ, the disciples, and others demonstrated this by baptism

2)   Through baptism they publicly identified with the redeemed

 B. Baptism is a picture of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ

Romans 6:4-5Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

5For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:”

FRIENDS – The Gospel is the Good News that Jesus Christ died for our sins and was buried and arose!

1 Corinthians 1-4 - Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;  4And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

C. Baptism Is A Picture Of The Change That Takes Place In The Sinner At The Time Of Salvation

1)    In salvation the sinner is reckoned dead, crucified with Christ, and the believer has been made alive unto God

Romans 6:11 - Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

THE RESULTS OF BAPTISM

A. The Believer Is Identified With Obedience To God’s Word

1)    Baptism is not an option – it is a command

2)   Those who submit to Scriptural baptism do so in obedience to His commands

3)   Obedience always brings God’s blessings

1 Sam. 15:5 - Samuel said: “… To obey is better than sacrifice …”

B. The Believer Identifies With God’s People

1)    In the N.T. all repentant believers were expected to be baptized and identified with a local church

THE AUTHORITY TO BAPTIZE

A. It does not rest with the individual believer

1)   There Are Personal Responsibilities For Individual Believers

  • Each Christian is expected to witness, to tithe, to study God’s Holy Word, etc.
  • No one else can do them for him – they ar his personal responsibilities

2)   There Are Responsibilities That Christians Have Collectively – As A Group

FRIENDS – God only left one organization of Christians on earth and that is the local church

As a church, God’s people are to:

1)    Receive and dispense the tithes and offerings as God directs;

2)   They are to call and ordain pastors and deacons

3)   They are to send missionaries around the world

4)   They are to exercise discipline

5)   They are to maintain facilities for teaching and preaching God’s Word

FRIENDS - It is ridiculous to think that an individual should assume the responsibilities of the church

  • The authority of administering baptism rests solely with the local church
  • Christ gave the commission to baptize – to the church

Matthew 28:19-20 - Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Then an only then Scriptural Baptism

  • Churches that substitute sprinkling and pouring for burial in water cannot administer Scriptural baptism
  • Churches that baptize babies cannot administer Scriptural baptism
  • Churches that teach that baptism is essential to a person’s salvation cannot administer Scriptural baptism
  • Churches that teach that baptism is not important or that it is an option cannot administer Scriptural baptism

CLOSE

Your baptism is important!

  • It means so much more than just a religious ritual
  • This morning – if you are saved – you should be Scripturally baptized!
  • It is a command!
  • Not just any authority will do when it comes to baptism

FRIENDS – Only the local N.T. church that teaches the truth about baptism can administer Scriptural baptism

  • One of the great distinctives of Baptists is our position on baptism

FRIENDS - The most important question for you this morning is this: “ARE YOU SAVED?

  • The next question is “HAVE YOU BEEN OBEDIENT IN THIS MATTER OF SCRIPTURAL BAPTISM?
