The Cost Of Saying “NO” To God Jonah 1:1-3 This morning I want to talk with you about the cost of saying “NO” to God.
FRIENDS – That is a dangerous position in which to find yourself
To teach us the consequences of such behavior, God has included an account of His dealings with the prophet Jonah
FRIENDS – God sent a storm into his life that affected him and those around him V.8 - Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; What is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?
V.11 - Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous.
Chapter 2 tells us of Jonah’s prayer for deliverance and ends with him being vomited out upon the dry land Chapter 3 begins with “and the Word of the Lord came upon Jonah the second time saying …” FRIENDS – Once Jonah had been rescued, God said: “Now, go and do what I told you to start with. “
Jonah entered into the city of Nineveh and began warning them of the impending judgment of God.
Jonah 4:1 – “But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry.” FRIENDS – Though he had been rescued from death – given another chance to obey – and had been used mightily by God – Jonah was ungrateful and unsatisfied.
I WANT US TO SEE FOUR THINGS IT COST JONAH BY SAYING “NO” TO GOD. IT COST HIM: 1. God’s Presence
IT COST HIM GOD’S PRESENCE A. Note: V.3 & v.10 – “But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD …” V. 10 - Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him. Why hast thou done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them. CHURCH CAN I TELL YOU THIS MORNING – I believe that it is possible for a person to become so backslidden that they no longer want to obey God’s Word
B. God is Omnipresent
QUESTION – What would it be like to come to a point in your relationship with God where you cry out to Him and you feel He isn’t there? |
|
How important is it to you to know and experience God’s presence and fellowship daily? C. A Great Danger Exists
CAN I TELL YOU CHURCH – GOD DOES CARE!
FRIENDS – Have you lost the presence of God in your life?
REPENTANCE! IT COST HIM GOD’S PLACE – V.2 “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.” A. God Had Told Him To Go To Nineveh
“But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.” FRIENDS – Are we exactly where God wants us to be?
B. We Are Not In God’s Will When We Are Not In God’s Place
FRIENDS - The place of service right now is in God’s house
President Kennedy popularized the statement: “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.”
C. God’s Blessings Are Waiting For Us
FRIENDS – I believe that one reason some believers have so much trouble is that they are not in God’s place
IT COST HIM GOD’S PEACE NOTE: Jonah 4:1-3 – “But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry. 2And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray thee, O LORD, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil. 3Therefore now, O LORD, take, I beseech thee, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.” A. Jonah Should Have Been The Happiest Man Alive
FRIENDS – If it had been up to me – I think I would have killed him on the spot
B. Obedience Is Doing What You Are Told To Do
DO WE KNOW THE PEACE OF GOD IN OUR LIVES THIS MORNING? WE CAN! IT COST HIM HIS PURPOSE A. God Has A Purpose For Our Life
B. God Will Still Forgive Us
WHAT ARE WE WRITING WITH OUR LIFE?
C. God Still Used Jonah To Bring About A Great Revival
CLOSE What does it cost to say no to God?
It cost Jonah:
Are we doing what we know God wants us to do – right now?
If not – come today!
