The Ecclesia
The "church" is coming under a lot of fire in the west. We're living at the transition point from a Christian world-view that predominated society, to a church that is standing at the margins of culture. Many voices are critical of the church (and often they are right) ... and what it most disconcerting is that many of these voices are coming from "within" the church herself. Yet Jesus promised that He would build the church! But what is the church all about? We need to grapple with these questions, and that's what this new series is all about.

Against All Odds
If you're going to live out the beatitudes in this world, then you will endure some sort of persecution or suffering on behalf of Jesus. The true nature of this world, being evil, opposes the goodness & justice of God's ways - a paradox that may not make sense, but it's true. We should not only expect resistance, but we should be thankful for it - because it proves we're on the right track. The church following Christ against all odds will be the church that sees the kingdom reign of God today! So, will you live, work, think, give, consume differently? BE different. Key passage: Matthew 5:10-12

Blessed are the peacemakers...
In a world that so desperately needs to SEE the tangible expressions of the kingdom of God coming to reign...Jesus steps to the "podium" and begins to detail what life in the "here and now" should look like. We've spent our summer weekends digging into the practical characteristics of this new life...and this weekend we deal with a deeply personal, proactive, and sometimes controversial role we are called to play...that of actively "making peace." When we look at Jesus' life, we recognize that He did not just stand by while the world spiraled out of control...He stepped in. He stood between opposing parties and stretched out His arms in reconciliation. He calls us to do the same! Key Passage: Matthew 5:9

Sneak Preview...
Ina world that so desperately needs to SEE the tangible expressions of the kingdom of God coming to reign, there may be no more powerful expression of the profound impact of God's grace in our lives, than the ability to offer, to give, and to receive forgiveness. Jesus reprimanded the "religious" of His own day, and told them that the "kingdom" would be given to those who would produce its "fruit". Forgiveness flourishes in the kingdom of God! There is not a person in this world that has not been sinned against, and the question of the child of God is very basic: can you offer the same forgiveness to others that God has offered to you? Key Passage: Matthew 5:7

I Long for Change!
In a world that so desperately needs to SEE the tangible expressions of the kingdom of God coming to reign... poverty eradicated, disease cured, wars ended, and relationships restored... we sometimes lose hope. Will we EVER see the powerful sweeping move of God in this way? Reminds me of Habakkuk 3:2 "LORD, I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds, O LORD. Renew them in our day, in our time make them known!" How hungry are we?

Blessed are the meek...
The big idea is this: that the meek can do anything in Christ. To be meek is a choice - the choice to be mild, humble and gentle. When we are meek, that is, submissive to God, we can be used powerfully for Him (see: 1 Corinthians 1:26-32, and Psalm 37:1-11). Key Passage: Matthew 5:5

Blessed are those who mourn...
A kingdom attitude changes kingdom life. And God's kingdom is here - not a future event - so that should affect the way we live. Jesus' message is new, and revolutionary. He tells us that we will have storms in our lives, but that we will be comforted - it's a promise! Although we may face grief and loss in our path, that is not our path's destination. Key Passage: Matthew 5:4
