Attributes and attitudes
Do you know the answer to the Westminster Shorter Catechism question: What is God? "God is a Spirit, infinite, eternal and unchangeable, in His being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness and truth." There are 7 communicable attributes listed here, which lead to 7 corresponding attitudes our Father God has towards us as His children, and which we can seek to emulate in our parenting of our children.

The deep desires of our heart
I must admit that I have never seen the TV show 'Desperate Housewives', and from what I've read about it, I don't think I ever want to. Anyway I don't need to, because there is a better version here in the Bible. Here in our text we have two desperate housewives: Leah and Rachel. One is desperate for love, the other is desperate for children.

What goes around ... comes around
Imagine a reflex tennis pole. You hit the ball away from you, then it comes around and hits you in the back of the head. What goes around... comes around! If we do something mean to someone else, God often has a way of making it come back around on us. This is what happens to Jacob in our text today.

Jacob meets his maker
199 years ago, Scottish novelist, Sir Walter Scott, wrote these famous words: "Oh what a tangled web we weave, when first we practise to deceive!" I'm sure nearly everyone of us can identify with the truth of those words. Today we walk with Jacob at the very beginning of his encounter with God. He is still very much embroiled in the tangled web of lies and deceit.

The heart of fathers and mothers
I'm sure we all love our children deeply. I love my children as my own soul, but I do not always parent them from my heart. I sometimes fail to exercise my own heart - exercise in the sense of a spiritual sweat and a pounding heart. I often fail to really engage their hearts. Parenting is all about seeking a meeting of hearts. We are aiming for parenting that is from heart to heart.

God's grace in a dysfunctional family
The overwhelming encouragement from our text today is that no matter how dysfunctional our family may be at times, God's purposes cannot be derailed. He accomplishes His eternal purposes through what we are really like.
