The house of God is home

Crunch time has come for Jacob. It is Bethel or bust! Going where he wanted to go, setting up camp where he wanted to set up camp, was jeopardising not only his own life and his family, but the whole concept of the covenant people of God. The bottom line is that every man needs a spiritual home. Jacob needed a spiritual home. Jacob knew where he belonged, in Bethel, but he was not there. Bethel, the house of God is our spiritual home. It is where we belong. It is where we meet with God, together with His covenant people.

The Godless chapter

Genesis 34 is a unique chapter in all the Bible. Apart from the book of Esther & the Song of Solomon, I am told that it is the only chapter in all the Bible that makes no mention of God. Esther and the Song are full of God - His influence, His gracious providence, a living relationship with Him. But not so with Genesis 34. It is a godless chapter. It is here by not being here. It is here by showing us the consequences when the gospel is ignored.

Consequences of compromise

Children's stories often end with the words, "and they lived happily ever after." It makes us feel good. We might have expected something like that at the end of Gen 33 with Jacob & Esau wonderfully reconciled. However, we turn the page and find one of the most disappointing chapters in all the Bible. It is full of rape, ransacking, murder and mayhem. And our hero, Jacob, is not the victim, rather he is implicated in it all. Why does this have to be in the Bible? I believe God is giving us a wake-up call about the consequences of compromise...
