What if God had not been with me?
Have you ever spent some time wondering why you are the person you are? What if you were someone else? Why am I who I am? What makes me me? Is it chance, or is it God? This question is prompted by what seems to me the key verse of our text: v42, "If the God of my father, the God of Abraham and the Fear of Isaac, had not been with me, you would surely have sent me away empty-handed." What if God had not been with me the way He has been...?

Time to go home
As you read this passage, you may well have been thinking: What is going on here? There are deals, counter-deals, broken-deals, breeding sticks, randy sheep and goats, genetic engineering, and dreams. It all makes for an interesting story, but why is it in the Bible? I believe we have here an illustration of our journey of life, and so the application centers around the question: Where are we going?

Heaven: a fool's paradise?
Many people would say that the only paradise that exists is a fool's paradise. By this they mean "a state of happiness based on a false hope." It exists only in the minds of fools. So we have our question tonight: Is heaven just a fool's paradise? I want to start with the answer you were not expecting - yes - heaven is a fool's paradise. However, a fool's paradise is not necessarily what you think it is.
